Emlyn
was born in Barrow-in-Furness on the 28th August 1947
and was married with two children.
The son of a international rugby player, he started
his football career in the Barrow youth ranks before
signing professional terms with Blackpool football club.
In 1967, only 29 first division games later, he was
transferred to Liverpool football club for £65,000,
the start of an era in which he played 650 games. he
lead them as Captain to achieve numerous footballing
honours, as well as taking England in the same direction.
In 1979 when "Crazy Horse" appeared to be
in the twilight of his career, Wolverhampton Wanderers
acquired him to rebuild their team. In his first season
with Wolves, he led them to win the League cup (the
only trophy never won with Liverpool).
In 1980 he was awarded the OBE in recognition of his
services to soccer.
The success of his media career following his retirement
from football, has been quite remarkable, His witty
and enthusiastic appearances a Team Captain on "Question
of Sport" and "Sporting Triangles" have
established Emlyn as one of the country's most popular
television personalities.
He was also acknowledged as one of the best Motivational
and After Dinner Speakers in Britain. Much of his material
was gleaned from his playing career as Captain of Liverpool
and England and memories and anecdotes of his mentor,
the late, great Bill Shankly. These recollections illustrate
his humour, determination and love for sport.
Following his death in 2004 Emlyn's wife Barbara and his sone Emlyn Jnr have continued to support Fable in his name.
