Michael Vaughan OBE
Born
October 29th 1974, Eccles, Manchester, England Debut
1993 1st XI Cap 3rd August 1995
Michael Paul Vaughan was born in Lancashire
but brought up in Sheffield and it was there as a schoolboy
that he developed the talents that have made him one
of the most outstanding opening batsman in the country.
Along the way, he has also proved himself to be a shrewd
and capable leader and there must be every chance that
one day he will go on to captain Yorkshire and possibly
England. Already he has captained England Under 19's
and England A with distinction and won his first full
England Cap during the 1999/2000 tour of South Africa.
It was while playing with school friends on the outfield
at Abbeydale Park, Sheffield, during the interval of
a championship match, that the young Vaughan's prowess
was spotted by a former Yorkshire coach Doug Padgett
and as a consequence Michael joined the Yorkshire Academy
at Bradford Park Avenue to become the first modern day
player born outside the county to be given a contract
by the club.
Appropriately, in view of his background, he made his
Yorkshire debut in the Roses match at Old Trafford in
1993 and his first innings 64 was a major factor in
a White Rose win by a narrow margin. From that point
on he made measured progress and his future was never
in doubt.
Michael,
who continues to develop his off-spin bowling, was awarded
his county cap in 1995 and took 17 wickets in the National
Cricket League during 1999. He has already rapped out
15 stylish first class centuries for Yorkshire, three
of which he narrowly failed to convert to double centuries.
In 1999 he became the first Yorkshire Batsman in nine
years to score a century in each innings when he hit
100 and 151 against Essex at Chelmsford.
Perhaps his most notable County innings to date was
his rugged and determined 177 against Durham at Riverside
in 1998. However Michael's career highlight was his
69 in the final Test Match in South Africa which won
him the Man of the match award and secured a full England
Contract for 2000. Michael has attended the England
and Wales Cricket Board approved management course at
the Bradford Management Centre and there is every indication
of a long and successful future for him in International
cricket.
Summer of 2005 saw him Captain the England cricket team
that regained the Ashes after 18 years from Austrailia
