E – 06 Long Term Paediatric Epilepsy Study
Professor Richard Robinson Paediatric Neurologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Medical School is leading a study into Vagus Nerve Stimulation in the treatment of children with epilepsy.
The study will take place at several hospitals in England and Scotland including Cambridge, Southampton, Sheffield, Manchester and Newcastle.
The E-06 study is designed to evaluate the relative benefits of VNS Therapy compared to further trials of anti epileptic medication once the ketogenic diet and surgery have been considered. Children will be randomised to VNS therapy or further anti convulsant trials for a year. Assessment during the study follows the same care pathway as for children not participating and thus mirrors current clinical practice.
The National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) has recently approved VNS in children but emphasize that it should be carried out as part of a well audited service.
If you feel that your child may be eligible you may wish to bring the trial to the notice of your child’s treating physician. Assessment for the trial may entail referral to one of the participating centres.
